Sameba – Our first stop is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, known as “Sameba.” The construction of the cathedral was completed in 2004, so it does not have as long a history as many other churches in Tbilisi. However, the Holy Trinity Cathedral impresses visitors in many ways. It is the third-largest Orthodox cathedral in the world, standing 97.5 meters tall, after Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.

The Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower
Next, we will visit the famous Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower. The tower was created by the well-known Georgian puppeteer Rezo Gabriadze. Every hour, a small window opens at the top, and an angel strikes the bell. Below the clock, a screen opens to show the “Circle of Life”: a boy meets a girl, they marry, have a child, and eventually pass away. The Clock Tower is a popular tourist attraction in the Old Town.

Тamada (Toastmaster) – This is truly a wonderful representation of Georgian traditions. In Georgia, being a tamada (toastmaster) means being a highly respected and important person at the table, responsible for leading the toasts

It was inhabited over 2,500 years ago and once served as the capital of the early Kingdom of Iberia. We will visit Jvari Monastery. The name of this monastery translates as “Monastery of the Cross.” It is named after the Georgian Monastery of the Cross in Jerusalem. Jvari is a 6th-century Georgian Orthodox monastery located near Mtskheta. Together with other historical monuments of Mtskheta, it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The monastery stands on top of a rocky mountain at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking the city of Mtskheta, the former capital of the Iberian Kingdom. We will also visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Mtskheta is one of the oldest cities in Georgia, founded by ancient Meskhetian tribes in the 5th century BC. Due to its historical significance and numerous cultural monuments, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It served as the capital of the early Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC until the 5th century AD. Even after that period, Mtskheta remained the coronation and burial site of most Georgian kings until the end of the monarchy in the 19th century.Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (literally “The Cathedral of the Living Pillar”) is currently the second-largest church building in Georgia after the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Known as the burial site of Christ’s robe, it is one of the most revered religious sites in the region. In addition, Svetitskhoveli was the coronation site of Georgian kings and served as their burial place.

Founded in 2001, the company produces wine, brandy, sparkling wine, and chacha using traditional Georgian methods combined with modern technologies. This approach allows the company to preserve the unique, ancient taste of Georgian wine while creating its own distinctive style for international distribution. We will have the opportunity to visit the winery and taste five types of Georgian wine as well as a 10-year-old brandy.Chkaveri is a white dry wine. The signature KTW wine “Chkaveri” dates back to 1880 in the village of Askana, where the winemaker Antimoz Chkhaidze founded one of the most well-known wine cellars of that period. It was he who created a new variety of wine, which he named “Chkaveri."

Stop: Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino, Sighnaghi, Georgia. The Monastery of St. Nino is located in the village of Bodbe, in the Sighnaghi district of Kakheti. The monastery grounds are beautifully decorated with flowerbeds, shrubs, vineyards, and a healing spring. The history of the monastery is closely connected with the adoption of Christianity in Georgia. According to legend, after the conversion to Christianity, King Mirian had a dream in which four stars flew over the four mountains of Georgia, and one of their rays shone over Bodbe. St. Nino went to that place and erected a cross there. She lived very modestly in a tent, where she later passed away. She was buried on the very spot where her tent once stood. At the beginning of the 4th century, a monastery was built on the site of her tent. The tomb of St. Nino is located inside the monastery, beneath the altar. Please note that photography of the altar is strictly prohibited.

Stop: Sighnaghi, Kakheti Region

Sighnaghi is a small and picturesque town in Kakheti. About ten years ago, it was a forgotten and rather унылый town, but after a large-scale restoration, it has transformed into a charming and well-developed tourist center with cobblestone streets and cozy houses topped with bright red tile roofs.

The town’s architecture is designed in the style of Southern Italian classicism. A number of hotels and guesthouses have also been built to suit every taste and preference.Sighnaghi is also known as the “City of Love.” This nickname comes from the local wedding house, where couples can get married at any time of day without prior application.

- Tour start time: 09:30

- Tour duration: 8–9 hours

The journey to the extinct five-thousand-meter volcano is not just a scenic route for professional mountain enthusiasts and lovers of rugged terrain—it’s a trip along a historic Georgian road, where you will learn about the reign of Queen Tamar, the internecine wars of the eristavs, Persian invasions, and the philosophical wanderings of travelers, from ordinary people to world-famous poets. You will also see the old residence of the eristavs and a submerged historical town.

Our first stop will be the 15th-century Ananuri Fortress, built in a picturesque gorge at the confluence of the Aragvi and Vedzathevi rivers. You will hear the remarkable story of this key stronghold of the Georgian Military Road, which was never captured in battle, and learn about the numerous wars among the local feudal princes—the eristavs.

Next, we will visit the shores of Zhinvali Reservoir, where we will discuss the reign of Queen Tamar, the submerged historical city, and archaeological evidence of ancient human settlements.

Heading further north, near the Cross Pass, you will encounter the popular ski resort Gudauri, the highest inhabited location along the road. We will stop at the fantastic viewpoint “Friendship Arch”, where you can see the Soviet-era mosaic panel, but more importantly, take in the breathtaking views of mountain landscapes and gorges.

Finally, we will reach the village of Stepantsminda, where you will get a close view of the towering Mount Kazbek and hear the local legends surrounding its origin. The Gergeti Trinity Church on the mountainside against the majestic Kazbek is one of the most iconic photo opportunities in the region. Besides the stunning scenery, the church is unique as the only cross-dome temple in this area. Here, we will recall Pushkin’s famous poem “The Monastery on Kazbek” and discuss historical events, including Persian invasions and relics hidden in the high-altitude church.

You will learn about the most fascinating events in the history of these places and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature. The city of Akhaltsikhe is mentioned in 12th-century chronicles, although it is actually much older. In the 16th century, the city was under Ottoman rule. We will visit Rabati Fortress, which housed the rulers’ palace. The fortress is especially notable for its halls, which are a vivid example of traditional Georgian residential architecture. The fortress impresses with its scale, grandeur, solidity, and rich decoration. After extensive restoration work, it is especially delightful to admire the full splendor of this remarkable place.
